It’s the run up to Christmas again, despite being only November, but this time of year we love as it always brings forward a damn good Derby County related book and this year is no exception.
Thanks to those good people down at Derby Book Publishing www.dbpublishing.co.uk we have been sent a book from the pen of renowned football journalist Dave Moore.
The book is entitled ‘Derby County- Champions at Last’ and is a diary of the Rams Triumphant 1971-72 season.
The book will certainly bring back memories for those vintage Rams fans, myself included. The front cover shows the Derby County squad in a typically 70’s coach and their adoring public surrounding it. That coach will be forever in my mind. I watched it come along the A6 in Belper, with the Championship trophy in the front window and the players waving from within. (please note the review copy of this book has the coach photograph on the front, the actual book for sale in the bookshop has the photo above.)
Anyway back to the book. The foreword is by a little known member of the Derby County squad, Tony Bailey, who played just one game in the Championship season against Dirty Leeds.
The book covers the whole season from pre-season, to Brian Clough lifting the trophy to the assembled Rams from the Council House in Derby. Front covers from the key games are reproduced to add to the team line-ups and match reports from each game played. Player profiles from all of the squad make a nice end to the book and the last chapter says it all for me ‘40 years on’ and sub title ‘how good were they?’
It was a magical time to be a Derby County fan and this book gives those who can remember a warm glow and for those not yet born gives a feel of that historic season.
Have to say the format has been seen before but not for the whole of that glorious First Championship winning season. This will make a great stocking filler for the footy fan in your life and to promote the 175 page paper back book we will be giving away a copy in one of our competitions in the next few days, so keep an eye out on the website for details...
