The Rams were awarded a free kick, Warren took offence that Preston man Richard Cresswell held on to the ball and as Barton tried to wrestle the ball from his grip Creswell was forced to the ground.
The referee approached Cresswell and booked him for holding on to the ball and preventing Derby from taking a free kick. Unfortunately Barton had, in the referee’s opinion, been too forceful in retrieving the ball from Creswell and sent
Barton off with a straight red card.
Barton will now get an automatic three-match suspension. He will miss the games against Walsall (Sat 5th Oct), Bradford City (Sat 12th Oct) and the crunch match with East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest (Sat 19th Oct). This at a time of sever problem for the Rams defence.
