Former Rams player Kevin Harper is asking why there are very few black players to make it at International level for Scotland.

With the increase in black and Asian communities in and around the big cities north of the border it is surprising that very few step into the professional game let alone to International level.

Harper who made just 26 appearances for the Rams before moving on to a more successful time with Portsmouth, never made it himself to International level. He did make the squad in 2003 whilst Berty Vogts was in charge but was an unused substitute during the Germans reign.

The very first black player to pull on the Scottish shirt was Andrew Watson way back in 1881-82 season and it wasn't until 2005 that Englishman Nigel Quashie, who had a Glasgow born Grandfather became the second.

Harper tends to blame racism for the lack of black players in the Scottish international scene. He himself was subject to abuse during his time playing in Scotland for Hibs and although he reported it and had video evidence to support his claim, no action was ever taken by the SFA.

Scotland could well be missing out on some talented youngsters if abuse is still rife among the officials and supporters of the Scottish game. It would be nice to think everyone stood an equal chance in today's football.
