Contrary to popular belief the Rams have not benefited from their ex Midfielder, Tom Huddlestone playing his first senior game for England at the weekend.

Huddlestone came on for his country late in the friendly International in Qatar, where England played Brazil. Despite the obvious pride in seeing a product of the Rams Academy take to the field the rumoured financial bonus did not have to be paid.

A part of the transfer deal which saw Huddlestone move to Tottenham Hotspur was a clause which stated the Rams would receive a further payment if the player played for England. Unfortunately it also stated that this would need to have been achieved by the end of 2008, and also have had to have made at least three appearances for his country.

The deal which took Huddlestone to Spurs came as the club was in the hands of the three amigos. The board were desperate for money at the time, with the club already heavily in debt, and a definite star of the future was sold for around an initial payment of just £700,000, but was said to be worth up to £2.5m with add-ons. The exact figures will never be known due to a confidentiality clause.

The sale of Huddlestone enabled the Rams to negotiate a loan of Monour El Hamdaoui in September 2005 and a further loan in February 2006. Spurs claimed they were still owed money for this loan and was just one of the many things which had to be 'tidied up' when Peter Gadsby took over the club.

There is some good news however and if Spurs ever sell Huddlestone there is a rumoured sell on clause of around 15% but with Huddlestone one of the brightest young English stars in the game, it would take a hefty offer for him to leave Spurs and for the Rams to claim their money...
