Nigel Pearson is remarkably upbeat after Saturday's defeat to Newcastle United. Stating he saw "more positives than negatives" from the game. The statement is partly true as the Rams looked reasonably comfortable for the first quarter of an hour before a wonderfully controlled volley from Gouffran in the 20th minute. Poor marking in the box allowing the shot beating Scott Carson and Johnny Russell on the line.
Derby were always on the back foot from that moment on and the telling balls into the front men failed to appear. The debutants brought in by Pearson to "freshen things up", failed to make any inroads into a Newcastle side who have turned their own dodgy start to the season around in recent weeks.
The positives must have been the performance by new winger Ikechi Anya, his endevour and athleticism were just what Pearson must have envisaged for his new look team. However his wing play failed to produce the chances that the other new arrivals at the club, James Wilson and Matej Vydra could thrive on.
Derby are soon back in action this week as they entertain Ipswich Town on Tuesday at the Ipro stadium and look to kick start their season.
