Davies, who like Burley, guided North End to the Championship play-off's last season, is being touted as the favourite for the managers role at Pride Park following Burley's resignation on Tuesday.

Preston chairman Derek Shaw, however, has dismissed the reports as pure speculation.

"I just think it's all speculation and I've heard absolutely nothing," he said.
