The Derby County 3-0 win was their fourth in a row from the start of the season. The Ram hoped to better their 1947-48 season start where they won three games in a row and drew the fourth, and succeed they did, and in some style.
Wins over last season's premiership sides, Birmingham and Blackpool gave Nigel Clough's youthful and rebuilt side all the confidence they needed and with just six minutes of the match gone it was one of the new boys who put the Rams in the lead. Kevin Kilbane soared majestically to head the ball home.
A fine start but Doncaster were not down hearted and gave as good as they received from the Rams. Giles Barnes being the butt of many dirisery chants from the Rams fans, but the former Derby player looked dangerous in small flashes.
The meager Donny crowd (847) may have looked like a "Where's Walley" competition in their strippy red and white shirts but the Walley seemed to be the referee. Mr Langford having just his second Championship game missing many poor challenges by the visitors and making some baffling decisions, much to the bemusment of the Derby crowd.
One nil at the break then, and although Derby may have narrowly edged it, both sides were still very much in the game. The Rams came out of the traps quickest in the second period and within 30 seconds made it two nil. This time it was Steve Davies finishing off a Ben Davies cross. Davies was himself on the score sheet on the hour mark curling a ball into the net to make it 3-0 and wrap up the game for the Rams.
Derby now move up to second place in the Championship and have only conceeded one goal this season. All this and they still have several players yet to return from injury. They now look to equal a record of five consecutive wins from the start of a season and that record has stood since 1905..!
