The ruling was originally the idea of Birmingham City but they have now been promoted back to the Premiership who already have the rule in place. Derby County in the form of Chairman of Football, Adam Pearson, took on the idea and formally tabled the idea at the Football league Chairmans meeting in Portugal.
Pearson and other Chairmen thought the extra two places on the bench would benefit the younger players in the football leagues squads, giving them more opportunity to feature as a substitute during league games.
The rule of just three substitutes allowed on the pitch is still in place but managers will now have more choice on who they put on the field...
