Paul Jewell saw his new charges, or a selection of them over power Burton with two goals in the first half, scored by two of Jewell's new signings . First on the score sheet was Stephen Davies scoring a well taken goal with just 18 minutes of play gone.
The Rams dominated play in the first period with the Rams displaying six of the summers new signings. Paul Connoly,Martin Albrechtsen, Jordon Stewart, Paul Green and Nathen Ellington all played in the first period. It was Ellington who scored the second Derby County goal just before the half time break. His screaming shot beating ex Rams keeper, Kevin Poole in the Burton goal.
A new look midfield paired Dean Leacock with Paul Green and the pairing seemed to work well. This left Robbie Savage to sit on the bench before getting his chance after the break.
The Rams were without five squad players for this game. Out with injury, were Kris Commons (tight hamstring), Alan Stubbs (knee), Claude Davies (knee) and Roy Carroll and Ruben Zadkovich was away preparing to play for Australia in the Olympic football event.
This win means a lot to Paul Jewell and for Rams fans, their joy on the message boards etc last night was as though the Rams had just won the league title or FA Cup but we all know this was just the small beginning of what will hopefully be a far better season than 2007-08.
