In media reports the new Chief Executive, Trevor Birch, has said that the Rams can compete in the transfer market but in later articles he is saying that Derby County will not commit financial suicide to stay in the Premier League but how much would relegation cost Derby County.
Having made it to the Premiership and its £60m riches it brings, Derby had to spend, mainly because of a financial agreement with the CO-OP bank to repay some of the debt remaining from the previous regime at the club. Player bonus's, were another bill waiting to be paid.
Having now spent a considerable part of the windfall of promotion the Rams must now look at strengthening the team, which will not come cheap.
Revealing how much we have to spend would inevitably alert smaller clubs with talented players to up their asking price but just how much are Derby prepared to spend and can they attract the quality players to Pride Park?
How well will we compete in the transfer market with just 54 more days until Derby County and Portsmouth take to the field in the opening game of season 2007-2008.
