A very small Pride Park crowd of just over 7,000 saw the Rams humbled by League two Shrewsbury Town.
Derby County were 3-0 down by half time and although Nigel Clough had made four changes from the side that beat Birmingham on Saturday, it was no excuse for a lack luster performance from the Championship side.
The Rams salvaged some pride by bringing the score back to a more respectable 2-3 but they couldn't stop the Shrews from going to to the next round.
Maybe the loss will help the Rams in their League campaign but fans were expecting something more than yet another defeat in the early rounds of the Carling Cup...
