The Derby midfielder, 36, made his 631st and final appearance on Saturday as the Rams ended their npower Championship campaign with a 2-1 defeat at play-off-bound Reading.
"You can see that I can still pass the ball and get about the pitch, but this is the right time to go out," Savage told the Derby Telegraph.
"I think it's good to go out at a time when people are saying you can play another year.
"It's still sinking in that I won't play football again but as I've said, I believe I'm too good to play in League One or League Two."
Savage will now focus on a full-time career in the media and he added: "I've got so many things going on. This is just the start of my next career - and I believe I can be the best in that."
