The Rams at the start of play last night (Friday 20th April) were four points adrift behind Championship leaders Sunderland and a point behind Birmingham, who were in second position. A single goal win against Luton was enough to see the Rams leapfrog Birmingham into second place and just a single point behind Sunderland who were on an 18 match unbeaten run.
Sunderland were expected to continue their run of success at Colchester this afternoon but under ex-Rams player Geraint Williams, the U's beat the Championship leaders by 3 goals to 1.
Tomorrow is another day and what difference will that bring, as Birmingham City travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers and must get at least a point to over take the Rams in second place. Three points would see Birmingham leap to the top of the Championship, leading Sunderland by a point and the Rams by two.
Yes the Championship race is on again and the Rams are not out of it yet. Automatic promotion is between just three teams in a Championship season that is one of the closest on record.
