Commons was at the centre of an incident during the first half of the Rams game against Bristol City, along with City's former England goalkeeper David James.
Commons received a defence cutting pass from Paul Green, that saw him free and bearing down on goal with only James to beat. The Derby striker was confident of rounding James and putting the Rams 1-0 up but James took Commons out of the play on the edge of the penalty area and should by the laws of the game have received an instant red card,
Sheldrake didn't see the foul as a clear goal scoring chance, although everyone else inside the Ashton gate ground was waiting for the red card. It seems James may have been saved from an early bath by his reputation as the England number one over several years, but it was quite clearly a mistake from the referee that cost the Rams dearly.
Commons went on to say he was disgusted with the referee, not only for the incident with James but for his performance during the whole match. Sheldrake refused to comment on the incident...
