The Rams took the lead with just 13 minutes on the clock, McLeod getting the headed goal. Just five minutes later McLeod is called into action again, this time to take a penalty. The spot kick was given for handball in the area; this after Tome was clearly fouled several times on his way into the area with the ball.
McLeod sent the keeper the wrong way with the penalty kick to put the Rams unbelievably two goals up in just 19 minutes.
With the Rams now full of confidence they go seeking a third goal and in the 25th minute they think they have it. Lee Morris goes down in the area and penalty number two for Derby is awarded.
McLeod takes the kick but places it in the same place as his earlier penalty goal and the keeper makes the save, the chance of a hatrick in the first half hour for the young McLeod now gone.
As the first half comes to a close the Rams go further in front from a rather comical goal by Tome.
McLeod takes the ball past the Mallorca keeper and cuts the ball back from the by-line. Tome shoots but hits a defender and the ball rises into the air. Three players compete for the ball, a defender, the keeper and Tome. The final touch must have been the Derby players as the ball ends up in the goal and Derby County are remarkably three goals to nil up over the Spaniards at the break.
The Spanish side dominated the second half, although Derby did have chances to increase their lead. Mallorca did manage to score although they didn’t have the penetration that could have hurt the Derby defence at any time.
So on a hot and Sunny Sunday afternoon it was Derby County who outshone the Spaniards, who incidentally finished in 9th place last season in the Primera Liga alongside teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona.
