Rams Captain Robbie Savage was predictably soundly booed every time he touched the ball but it was left to Leeds old boy Rob Hulse to open the scoring, finishing with a clinical shot the schnitzel in the Leeds goal just couldn't stop. Hulse showed his respect to the Leeds fans by not celebrating his strike.
Rams fans joy lasted just three minutes when a bad piece of defending left Leeds with a clear shot on goal, giving Stephen Bywater no chance of saving it.
A debatable penalty finally sealed the points for the Rams a surging run into the box by Cwyka was thought to have been stopped unfairly by the referee and Kris Commons slotted the ball coolly past Schmeichael, as the famous son of Peter Schmeichael committed him self by diving to the right as Commons stroked the ball to the left.
A good opening day test for the Rams has been passed and fan now must have a renewed hope for the rest of the season judging by this early season form.
Excellent games by newcomers to the squad, John Brayford and James Bailey, whilst new permanent signing Tomasz Cywka also had a good opening day game. Both sides will get better once the rust has been removed from bodies and they regain match fitness but an entertaining evening and three points gives everyone a boost at Pride Park...
